5 Ways to Stay Fit with your Family

When some people here the word Exercise, they cringe. But exercise can be fun, especially when you do it as a family.

Exercise also doesn't mean going to the gym or putting together a workout routine. There are simple things you can do to stay active and fit without having to carve out a lot of extra time out of your day or money from your budget.

Here are the 5 most simple things you can do with your family to stay fit:

Family Walking Outdoors

Simple. Every evening after school and work, get the family outside for a walk.

Depending on the age of your kids, I'd recommend planning a path that will take you at least 20 minutes to complete. And it doesn't just need to be around your neighborhood. You can jump in the car and head to the river or nearby park and experience a new environment.

I feel this is something that can get overlooked when families feel they need to get active. Walking has a host of benefits from improving your cardiovascular fitness to reducing stress. Although walking outdoors has more benefits than walking indoors, if it is cold certain times of the year where you live, find an indoor track that you can walk to stay active.

Creating a habit of going for a walk daily can make a big impact on your overall health.

 Family Biking for Exercise

This one is only doable if you have enough bikes for your whole family, but again, another easy way to get outside and stay fit.

Going for a bike ride is a great choice for adults who have issues with their knees or hips as it is easier on your joints than walking. Biking is also a good option for families with small kids if you're able to get a ride along seat for your child.

Depending on the intensity of your bike ride, or the elevation changes on your route, biking is typically less strenuous that walking or running, so make sure to plan a longer route. Also, switch up the scenery and pack up the bikes and drive to scenic park or river to keep things fresh.

Biking is another activity that would be easy to do daily, so make it a habit.

Swimming as a Family

Head to the pool for some exercise.

Most pools offer a section for lane swimming where you'll be able to put in some laps to burn some calories.

If your kids or younger or have not yet learned to swim well, playing games in the pool is also a good way to get them to burn some energy. Games like monkey in the middle or pool basketball are good ways to keep moving in the pool.

Lake swimming is also fun. My family enjoys heading out on the boat, stopping in the middle of the lake and jumping off and swimming around. I don't recommend doing this without life jackets though if you're kids aren't experienced swimmers.

Outdoor Games

Soccer as a Family

This one can be a variety of things, but often the kids choice of getting some exercise.

Some of the best, easy to do games outside with kids are:

  • Soccer
  • Baseball
  • Basketball (if you have a court nearby)
  • Football

I'd recommend planning one evening or weekend day a week to get to the park with your kids to play a game. Not only will they have fun, but they'll be getting better at a skill that could serve them well in the future.

A family dancing

You either love this one or hate it, but it will get the family moving.

Plan a party night where you crank up the music and get moving. You don't have to be good at, just move your body. Mix in some karaoke and some low sugar beverages and have a good time.

If you have a gaming console, look into getting a game like Just Dance 2022. This game will have you moving and sweating in no time. Who knew video games could come in valuable.

There are so many things you can do to stay active with you family. These are just a few simple ideas that can often get overlooked. Work these into your weekly routines and your family will stay active and healthy.
